Buying contemporary Chinese art has long been out of reach for most people, but now a new innovative art store is hoping to turn the situation around. Known for its bold and visionary exhibitions and popular education programs, Beijing's Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art (UCCA) has re-launched its concept store, making the possibility of hanging a true work of art in your lounge room, a reality.
From limited editions by some of China's hottest contemporary artists to original works by cutting-edge designers, the UCCA store is giving art lovers a fresh new way to integrate creativity into their everyday lives.
"Our store aligns with UCCA's vision to provide an international platform for premiere Chinese artists and designers," UCCA store director Xue Mei commented.
"To that end, a separate room is dedicated to the display of limited editions by some of China's most sought-after artists, at a. ordable prices." Popular limited editions include Zhang Xiaogang's lithograph Big Family Portrait and Yue Minjun's Happiness as well as the iconic Made in China dinosaur sculpture by Sui Jianguo.
"The most popular item from the limited editions is photograph San Jie by noted female artist Cui Xiuwen," Xue told the Global Times. The work depicts a young Chinese girl posing as all 13 characters in Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper. The original piece fetched 324,480 yuan ($47,517) at Sotheby's Hong Kong Auction in 2006 and now 30 limited edition prints are available at 8,000 yuan ($1,172) each.
