American film stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are suing a British newspaper, the News of the World that reported the Hollywood couple was going to split, the couple’s lawyer confirmed Monday.

The paper said in a story which was published on January 24 that the couple would separate and had agreed the division of assets worth $320 million (2.18 billion yuan) and custody of their children. It also said the separation would occur imminently.

Keith Schilling, the couple's lawyer said the "widely republished" allegations were "false and intrusive". He added that the paper had failed to meet "reasonable demands" for an apology, according to BBC News

Schilling mentioned that Sorrell Trope, a high profile divorce lawyer in Los Angeles had never met the couple.

Trope said in a letter to the couple’s lawyer, "I have had no contact from... Angelina Jolie and / or Brad Pitt," and "I have never met... your clients or had any involvement with either of them. The foregoing is true with respect to all other members of this firm."

A spokesperson for the News of the World declined to comment on the couple's decision to sue the newspaper.

Pitt and Jolie, who are not married, have six children. Pitt who was previously married to Jennifer Aniston divorced in 2005 when he worked on the film Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Jolie.
