A 90-year-old woman surnamed Fu in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, who has smoked since she was 16, has made a 2.3-kilogram quilt pad from cigarette filters that she saved over the past 40 years.

Fu rolled her own cigarettes until the 1970s when she switched to filtered brands and smoked between half a pack and one pack daily.

But she cut the filters off and saved them in sacks and after almost 40 years, she accumulated enough old filters that she paid eight yuan ($1.20) to have the filters cleaned and fluffed and made it into the unique quilt padding.

A daughter, Liu Guihua, said she and her siblings have long urged their mother to quit smoking and have never been happy with the quilt idea.

“But she persisted and said the filter sponge was better than cotton for making a soft quilt,” Liu said.
