Facing slumping sales in her clothing business, a middle-aged woman surnamed Chen from Chongqing sought out a fortuneteller to tell her what was going wrong.
In a fine display of quackery, the seer blamed her misfortune on the shape of her nose, claiming it was not full and round enough at the tip, and suggested Chen get a nose job to make it more "attractive to fortune."
Convinced of the remedy, Chen has undergone three operations on her nose since 2007, spending tens of thousands of yuan. Soon after her third attempt in September 2009, Chen found her once fabulous (though not yet profitable) nose now becoming monstrous.
She immediately sought help from Chongqing Emergency Medical Center (CEMC), where chief surgeon Wu Yi determined there was irreversible damage to her nasal tissue, her nose beyond repair after her multiple operations.
"Currently women between 35 to 45 account for the driving force behind nose cosmetic surgery, many asking for 'fortune noses' and 'lucky husband noses' based in complete superstition," said Wu.
"They'll come in again and again, until there's nothing left to work with," he added.
