A rare large-scale exhibition of world famous surrealist painter Salvador Dali is being held in Shanghai, with art lovers afforded an unmissable opportunity to come face to face with some of the artist’s most significant works.

Salvador Dali in Shanghai is currently being held at the Shanghai Art Museum to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the great master’s death. It is the first complete exhibition showcasing Dali in China, a retrospective of some of his greatest achievements.

Alongside recognizable pieces, the collection of over 350 works includes beautiful bronze sculptures, oil paintings rarely seen and many unique drawings, providing a valuable glimpse inside the artist’s life and imagination.

The exhibition is divided into three sections, “Dream and Fantasy,” “Lust and Women” and “Religion and Mythology,” covering many of the subjects Dali focused on throughout his career.

“Dali is undoubtedly one of the most significant painters of last century,” Benjamin Levi, curator of the exhibition and president of the Stratton Foundation, organizer of the exhibition, told the Global Times.

An avid collector of Dali’s work for over 40 years, Levi himself was a close friend of the great artist.

Born in the city of Figueres in northeastern Spain in 1904, Dali’s talent became obvious early in his life. His first exhibition was held when he was only 14 years old. During later explorations into surrealism, he soon became representative of the genre. He is also widely credited as being among the most distinguished artists of last century.
