Built in 1443, the Qambaling Monastery lies in Chamdo Prefecture, eastern Tibet and is the earliest and largest monastery of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in Kham area. The name of the monastery originated from its major worshipping Buddha named Qamba Buddha.
It is said that when Master Tsongkapa at his age of 16 returned to Tibet from Qinghai Province by way of Chamdo, he had predicted that Chamdo would be a wonderful place to build temples and promote Buddhism. Later, Sherab Sangpo, one of his prentices, finally built the monastery with 8-year construction.
