Attractions: Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province

Yungang Grottoes are located on the southern foot of Mt. Wuzhou, 16 kilometers west of Datong county, Shanxi Province. The grottoes run from east to west for one kilometer are among China's largest grottoes together with the Dunhuang Grottoes, the Longmen Grottoes and the Maijishan Grottoes. With a history of over 1,500 years, the Yungang Grottoes have altogether 45 caves, 252 grottoes and 51,000 figures which illustrate China's Buddhism from the 5th to the 6th centuries. The figures range from several centimeters high to over 10 metres high with different gestures or various musical instruments that are really masterpieces in China's Buddhist arts.
