Situated in the central part of Qiao Town, Qi county in Shanxi Province, the Qiao Family Compound occupies an area of 8,274 square meters, or about two acres, with a construction area of 3,870 square meters. It consists of six main courtyards, 20 smaller courtyards and 313 rooms. This is the site where the Zhang Yimou's movie, Raise the Red Lantern was filmed.

The inner courtyards and passages of the Qiao Compound were designed in the shape of the Chinese character "shuangxi", which means "double happiness" in English. The roofs are shaped like waves and mountain peaks.
