The increasing number of airlines flying to Fiji and a direct flight from Hong Kong to Nadi, which starts on December 3, are expected to boost the number of tourists to Fiji and make tourism a major source of income for the Pacific island nation, according to the Fiji government and tourism stakeholders on Tuesday.

Qantas subsidiary Jetstar Airways and V Australia Airlines will start heated competition in servicing Fiji within months. The non-stop Air Pacific flights from Hong Kong to Fiji's resort city of Nadi connect Fiji to Europe.

The direct Hong Kong-Nadi flight was established after the Fijian carrier Air Pacific canceled the Tokyo-Nadi route which saw falling demand resulting in losses and failed to increase again after years of efforts.

Fiji has the largest market share of Chinese visitors compared with its neighboring Pacific island countries. Both Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Fiji's Tourism Minister and Fei Mingxing, Chinese Embassy Counselor in Fiji believe that the recent move by Air Pacific would increase tourists from Asian countries to Fiji.
