Hongcun Village is shaped like an ox with the nearby Leigang Hill as the head, two trees standing on the hill like horns, four bridges across the Jiyin stream that are its legs, and the houses of the village create the body; even the Jiyin stream becomes its intestines and the lakes, including the South Lake (Nanhu) looks like its stomach. Its approximately 150 residences with unique architecture and carvings dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties are among the best of their kind in China.
